This large, purple-skinned, freestone plum is super flavorful and very sweet when fully ripe. In Missoula, we wait until the frost gets them before harvesting, as it softens and sweetens the fruit. But don't do leave it on the tree for many consecutive evenings of frost because it will then become bland.

Versatile Uses

Italian plums can be eaten fresh, dried, or cooked, making them a versatile addition to any garden or kitchen.

Cold Hardiness and Growing Zones

A vigorous and fairly cold-hardy plum, Italian is perfect for most areas in Western Montana, unless you're in one of the colder areas (i.e. Potomac). It’s recommended for Zone 4 and it survived -25°F in Missoula on 1/13/24 without showing any signs of injury. Italian's limit, however, in terms of absolute extreme winter low tolerance is likely to -35°F, possibly -40°F if planted in a good area free of frost pooling.

Self-Fertility and Pollination

Italian is partially self-fertile and doesn’t require a pollenizer, though it may fruit more abundantly when planted alongside varieties like President, Stanley, Mirabelle de Bitterroot, or others. It is best known as a high-quality fresh eating plum, but also well known as a prune plum (perhaps after Italian).

Flavor & Uses

We tried Stanley for the first time from one of Doug Hawes-Davis' trees in Missoula. They are reminiscent of an Italian, although a little bit sweeter. Some growers note that they also make excellent wine.

Cold Hardiness

While some sources list Stanley as a Zone 5 plum, our experience suggests it is better suited to Zone 4. It has survived significant early fall frosts at our nursery, including temperatures down to −10°F on October 26, 2020, indicating an ability to handle colder conditions than often reported.

In our experience in western Montana, Stanley is a solid Zone 4 plum. However, if you are in an area that regularly sees temperatures below −30°F (and certainly anything colder than -35F), we recommend planting some of the hardier plums we offer instead. These include Asian × American hybrids such as Toka, Pipestone, Underwood, and Kuban Delight, as well as very hardy European plums like Northern Blue, La Crescent, Ptitsin #5, and Mount Royal, all of which can tolerate −40°F and possibly colder when well sited.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Stanley performs best in protected locations, away from frost pockets and strong winds. Sites with nearby structures or pavement that provide additional warmth and shelter tend to be especially favorable if you are in an area that can see -30F or colder (probably wouldn't make it past -35F).

Pollination

For best fruit set, plant Stanley with Italian, Northern Blue, La Crescent, Ptitsin #5, or Mount Royal.

Tree Size & Rootstock

These trees are approximately 5–7 ft tall and are grafted onto Lovell full-size rootstock.

Montana Fruit Trees
Lovell Full Size: 5-7 ft. We tried growing it after learning it was hardy to zone 5. I wouldn’t plant Santa Rosa nor any of our other Asian plums (except Taylor Apple Pear) any lower than zone 5. They do happen to like our hot summers and grow well, but the only thing is (as is the case we’ve found with all Asian plums in zone 5) they must be wrapped in burlap if you see the forecast call for below 0 temps before Dec. 1st (as is the case with other fruits like most of the sweet cherries and most peaches).
