Whitney Crab
Whitney Crab
Whitney crab produces small, sweet edible crab apples. The flesh is sweet, juicy, and slightly yellow and the blossoms are pinkish white. Not as stunning as the Red Splendor’s foliage but Whitney does flower more reliably on an annual basis than Red Splendor, which. Although we have no experience with this, some sources say they are great for canning, preserving, pickling, spicing and cider. Although we’ve never used it in cider, according to Albemarle Ciderworks, “Whitney Crab will grow from 1 to 2 inches in diameter and contains 11.39% sugar that will ferment to 5+% alcohol in cider production”.
Cold-hardy, heat-tolerant and scab-resistant. Ripens in late August or early September Self-fertile. Zone 3.
This tree is smaller than most of our other trees as it as around 3/8”-1/2” diameter trunk size.
