Vermont Beauty Seedling (Bundle of 2)
Vermont Beauty Seedling (Bundle of 2)
Although we do not have any Vermont Beauty in its pure form, we are offering Vermont Beauty seedlings due to its fairly good degree of cold hardiness, flavor, and especially its disease resistance, as it is highly resistant to fireblight. The fruit is lemon yellow with yellow-tinged flesh. The fruit basically melts in your mouth, is juicy, smooth & dense, and is fine-grained. It keeps well for about 2-3 months. Will survive down to at least -30F. Zone 4a (possibly 3b).
A Note On These Vermont Beauty’s Genetics: We have a duty to be growing more from seed and for people to grow their own unique trees—the next Seckel! Unlike any other tree (genetically speaking) in the world. Just like all of us. Also, when we grow from seed, we allow for biology to continue to collect information (which is what genes are), instead of keeping it in a biological time-capsule, thereby allowing other forms of biology to catch up and exploit its “older” genes. Enter disease! The fact that these seedlings’ parent (at least one of them) has that high degree of fireblight resistance means that its progeny may as well. As for the other European pears that the one Vermont Beauty parent could have crosse with, it is hard to say. But one thing that is likely certain is this seedlings’ hardiness. Of all the 30 pear trees in the vicinity of this Vermont Beauty, only one of the pears (an Abate Fetel), was considered a zone 5 pear. 17/30 (56%) were considered zone 4, whereas 10/30 (33%) were zone 3, and 2/30 (7% were considered zone 2. So that means the progeny will in all likelihood inherent cold hardiness of either the same (56%) or colder (40%).
These seedlings are small and are 6-12” tall.
