Blueberry Shrubs
Our blueberry shrubs come from the University of Minnesota’s half-high breeding program—perfect for cold Montana climates.
Half-high means these blueberries are a cross between lowbush and highbush types, combining compact size with extreme cold hardiness and consistent yields. In our experience, these blueberries thrive even after deep freezes, producing sweet, flavorful berries that hold up year after year. In most locations in Montana, which involve very alkaline soils (pH typically between 7.5-8.5, the soil around the blueberries must be periodically amended with some elemental sulfur (but be careful not to overdo it), and should be planted in at least 50% sphagnum peat moss. You could even go the extra step and water with surface water, which is typically buffered against the effects of high pH, compared to groundwater.
