Tart & Sour Cherry Trees

Tart cherries, also called sour or pie cherries, are hardier than their sweet cherry cousins, but they vary in sweetness. Montmorency leans strongly tart, making it ideal for pies, drying, and processing. Danube, a Hungarian variety that thrives in Western Montana, is among the sweetest tart cherries. Evan’s Bali is the hardiest, surviving temperatures below –40°F, and nearly matches Danube in sweetness. Our other tart cherry offerings fall between these in flavor, providing a balance of tartness and sweetness.

Montmorency, Balaton, Meteor and Evan’s Bali are self-fertile, so one tree will crop on its own. For pie filling, start with our best cherries for pies.
