Native Trees

Native trees for Montana and the northern plains, grown from extremely hardy seed sources east of the divide. All of them are hardy to at least zone 3, most to zone 2, and aspen and chokecherry go all the way to zone 1. They come in bundles, so you can plant a windbreak, a hedgerow or a whole draw.

Where each one is native

Most of these are native to Montana, though some only grow wild in parts of the state, and a couple come from just outside it. Serviceberry, chokecherry, hawthorn, mountain ash, peach leaf willow, Native American plum, Rocky Mountain juniper, cottonwood and Ponderosa pine grow wild across much of the state.

Sand cherry and bur oak reach west into southeast Montana. American linden reaches North Dakota but not quite Montana, and northern red oak reaches eastern North Dakota. They're all hardy across most of Montana.
