STRAWBERRIES

Strawberries are some of the toughest and most rewarding things you can grow. The below varieties come on throughout the season. AC Wendy and Annapolis ripen early with big, sweet berries; Cavendish and Honeoye keep the harvest going midseason with firm, flavorful fruit; and Sparkle wraps things up with smaller, rich red berries good for jam. Planting all three ripening groups gives you 6-8 weeks of fresh, homegrown strawberries from early June into even early August. These are al hardy to around −40°F and even colder with winter mulch. We still cover them where temps hit −30°F, but with 6 inches or more of wood mulch or straw, they can handle down to −50°F.
