Alderman Plum is a hardy, Asian-American hybrid plum released by the University of Minnesota in 1986 from a cross between the 'Burbank' plum and an unknown parent labeled 'Older.' Alderman has been growing successfully in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, particularly on a site in Stevensville, for over 20 years, having withstood -40F there. To what extent Alderman is able to survive colder temps we are unsure. If people have more data on extreme survivability of cold temps then please let us know! Purvis lists this as a zone 3b, which we would say is accurate.

Growth Habit & Bloom

Alderman is somewhat spreading, moderately vigorous, and fairly precocious. It produces lots of large white blooms, which is why many list it also as highly ornamental. Mid-to late bloom; pollenizers include Superior, Pipestone, and Toka, as well as Native American and Prairie Red Plum.

Flavor & Fruit

Flavor is one of the best of the Asian x American hybrid plums. Fruit is about 2 inches, dark red, with golden, sweet, juicy clingstone flesh. Excellent eating quality and keeps well. Ripens Sept. 1–5 in central MN and late August in Idaho.
