Overview
Goji Berry is a hardy, long-lived fruiting shrub with a long history of use in Asia and Central Eurasia, where it has been grown for food and traditional medicine for centuries. The plants we offer are grown from seed sourced from North Dakota genetics, selected for their ability to withstand extreme continental cold and harsh winters.
Growth Habit
Goji forms a vigorous, arching to spreading shrub, typically reaching 4–6 feet tall and wide over time. Plants sucker and spread gradually, making them well suited to hedgerows, food forests, and low-input plantings. They are adaptable to a range of soils and are generally tolerant of drought once established.
Fruit, Uses & Medicinal Value
Goji berries are small, elongated red fruits traditionally used dried rather than fresh. They have a long reputation for medicinal use, with sources citing general vitality, eye health, and immune support. Because these plants are grown from seed, fresh-eating quality can be variable and somewhat of a gamble. However, they are very well suited for drying, where differences in fresh flavor matter far less and the fruit performs consistently well.
Cold Hardiness
These goji berries have a good degree of cold hardiness, with genetics that have survived temperatures down to −40°F. They should be considered a solid Zone 3 shrub, well adapted to northern plains and mountain climates where many fruiting shrubs fail.
