These are seedlings from 'Haralson' apple, which was discovered in Stevensville, MT
Click here for a full description of 'Haralson', the mother tree that produced the fruit from which these seeds were propagated.
This seedlings will be full size, standard apple trees, and due to the fact that these seedlings are from open pollinated seeds, the genetic makeup of them will be unknown, other than the 50% parentage from 'Haralson'. The reasons that these could have interesting or worthy genetic potential as seedlings is that Haralson is hardy down to -45F, which make it near the top of its class. However, key word here is 'near'. Haralson is a fairly late apple, ripening around early October in Missoula. The tree also shuts down fairly late. As such, Haralson and the vast majority of the University of Minnesota apples, such Honeycrisp, Frostbite, and others, do not do well in areas such as Gallatin Gateway, which can experience -47F winters. Look to other, more cold hardy varieties. That said, Haralson is gourmet, as it makes for fresh eating. Also great processed and stores for several months.
