Zone 3 winters hit -40°F. This is where cold-hardy fruit gets interesting: a full range of apples, pears, plums, apricots, tart and dwarf cherries, raspberries, blueberries and grapes, all rated hardy through the whole zone.
More about growing fruit in zone 3
We rate every variety by the coldest night it has actually come through, at our two Montana sites in Missoula and Florence or with trusted growers farther north, not by a catalog average. A bare zone number means the whole zone, colder half included. A b, like 3b, means the warmer half only. Arkansas Black is a good example. Trees at Canyon View Nursery in Corvallis, Montana came through -38°F in January 2024, which is why we rate it a full zone 3.
Honeycrisp, Haralson and Frostbite apples, Westcot apricot, Trader mulberry, the Cold Climate Blueberry Bundle, huckleberry, Nova and Boyne raspberries, and Somerset Seedless and Valiant grapes all grow across the whole zone. So does everything on the zone 2 page.
In the warmer half of the zone (3b, -35°F to -30°F) the list grows a lot: Lapins, Gold, Black Gold and White Gold sweet cherries, Bartlett pear, Italian plum, Zard apricot and Siberian C peach. They're rated to 3b, so save them for 3b sites. Use the Plant Finder to see every plant for your exact zone.
Other zones: Zone 2 · Zone 4. Find your zone with our cold hardiness calculator.
