Overview

These hybrid hazelnut seedlings come from Perfect Circle Farm (PCF), from what they consider their best performing and most productive line.

Origin and History

Perfect Circle Farm is a small family farm and nursery in central Vermont, in zone 4, run by Buzz and Sandra Ferver. As they put it, "we grow seed from cultivars and select improved mother trees." These seedlings come out of that work. PCF hasn't published the specific mother trees behind them, so we can't give you a pedigree.

Fruit and Uses

Hybrid hazels are grown for the nuts, and they also make a good hedgerow and wildlife planting. Since these are seedlings, nut size and quality will vary from plant to plant.

Growth Habit and Spacing

Hybrid hazels grow as big multi-stemmed shrubs. These are 6 to 12 inch seedlings, sold in bundles of three.

Pollination

Hazelnuts can't pollenize themselves, so you need at least two genetically different plants. Every seedling in the bundle is a different genotype, which takes care of that.
