We pride ourselves on doing the right thing. We not only stand by the quality of our products but we back it up by being mission focused. Our mission is to increase the food production capacity for growers in Montana and beyond and in order for us to accomplish this mission, our customers must be successful. We do our best to provide everyone with the best quality plants possible. And we are steered by our mission when helping make right any problems that customers may have.

What customers tell us

Most of the feedback lands on the same few things. Trees show up healthy, packed well and pruned well, and more than a few people have said ours looked a year older and better branched than what they got from another nursery. Root systems come up a lot. An arborist working across Wyoming and Montana wrote that these are the only fruit trees she recommends her clients plant, and the roots are the reason.

Just as many reviews are about the help rather than the plants. Picking varieties that suit somebody's actual site, pruning advice, planting instructions, questions answered fast, including late at night during shipping season. We have invested a ton of time and resources this offseason (writing this as of Sept. 2026) in creating more tools to help you succeed (pollination and ripening maps, filtering by usage, etc.). And a ton more to come! One review that means a ton to us: growers in genuinely rough country, such as northwest North Dakota, the Salmon River valley in Idaho, reporting trees still alive and producing years later. One commercial orchard has been ordering from us since we began selling trees out of a storage unit in 2019!

Where it hasn't gone right

Not every order has gone well, but we try to learn from our mistakes!

Some of it comes down to the plants themselves. Dwarf cherries are a good example of this. Propagation rights mean we bring them in tissue cultured from Canada and then grow them out another year. Between import costs, royalties and the time it takes us to grow them out, they used to be the most expensive plant we sold relative to how big they were. Although we listed them at 8 to 14 inches, a customer who opened the box expected something larger and was understandably let down. In part because of this review, we changed how we grow dwarf cherries altogether. They do much better field grown and not container grown (how we were growing them). So it was actually this negative review that pushed us to produce an even better product. Our dwarf cherries are now much larger (3-5 ft.) with lots of branching and a really nice root system.

Some of it is weather. In late October 2020 much of Montana dropped to somewhere between -7 and -20, the coldest the state had seen that early in the season since 1917. It killed trees that had looked perfectly healthy in September. Peaches and nectarines were injured or killed the most, which is a pattern we have seen in those early, severe fall frosts.

And some of it is simply loss. This is always the risk with planting anything. But this is where we've got you covered.

What we do about it

  • Anything that doesn't bud out the year you plant it gets a credit. Starting in 2026 we also credit shipping, proportionate to the share of the order that didn't bud out.
  • We used to not guarantee end of season clearance trees. However, we have abandoned this policy and now even fully guarantee our end of season clearance stock.
  • We also offer year round support when troubleshooting any question customers may have about their trees, whether it is insect or disease related or simply something off about the tree, we are here to help.
  • We also offer the best insight into things that have worked for us when growing plants. After all, we grow all of these plants out ourselves not only as nursery stock but in establishing our mother trees at our Missoula and Bitterroot location.
  • If something has gone wrong with your order, email office@montanafruittrees.com and we'll work it out.
