Male & Female Plants (Dioecious Trees & Shrubs)

Plants where each one is either male or female. Only the females make fruit, and only if there's a male close enough to pollenize them. That's why our sea buckthorn, buffaloberry and persimmon come as bundles. Plant the whole bundle together and you've got both.

For fruit, this is the page that matters. Sea buckthorn and buffaloberry are wind-pollinated nitrogen fixers hardy to zone 2, and both need males in the planting to set fruit. The Montana Trial Persimmon bundle is American persimmon, which is dioecious too. Keep the plants in a group, not scattered across the property.

The rest of the list is trees and shrubs you're more likely planting for shade, windbreak or wildlife, like aspen, cottonwood, peach leaf willow, hybrid poplar, Rocky Mountain juniper and staghorn sumac. For those, sex doesn't matter much unless you want the berries (juniper and sumac females) or want to avoid the cotton (female cottonwoods).
