Self-Fertile Cherry Trees

Sweet and tart cherries that set fruit on their own pollen, so one tree will crop. Every tart cherry we grow is self-fertile. For sweet cherries it comes down to a few varieties, and these are the ones.

More about self-fertile cherries

Lapins, Black Gold and White Gold are our self-fertile sweet cherries, all rated to zone 3b. They'll fruit alone and they also pollenize other sweet cherries, so they're a good first tree if you want to add more later. Gold is the one sweet cherry we grow that needs a partner. Our Gold vs Lapins page goes through the difference.

For tart cherries, Evan's Bali (zone 2b) is the one we'd plant first in cold country. Montmorency, Meteor and Balaton round it out, and Romeo and Juliet from Saskatchewan stay small and take zone 2. See Evans Bali vs Montmorency if you're stuck between those two.

Sweet and tart cherries don't pollenize each other in any useful way, so think about them as two separate groups. The sweet cherry and tart cherry pollination maps have the details.
