Mid-Season Apple Trees

Apples that come ripe in September here in Missoula. This is the heart of apple season, and it's where a lot of the best-known apples land. They finish well ahead of the freeze in most cold country and a lot of them keep into winter.

More about mid-season apples

Honeycrisp (zone 2b) and Haralson (zone 2b) are the Minnesota classics. Wealthy takes zone 2 and makes great sauce, and Wolf River (zone 2b) grows apples big enough that one makes a pie.

For eating, look at Macoun, Cortland, Empire, Sweet Sixteen, Cox Orange Pippin and Hidden Rose. If disease is a worry, Liberty, Nova Easygro, Red Baron and St. Edmund's Pippin are all here.

These are Missoula dates, and they move with your climate. Our ripening map converts every variety to your town. Pair a mid-season apple with an early and a late one to spread the harvest out.
