More about shopping our whole catalog
This is everything we've got, so it's a lot to scroll through. The quickest way to narrow it down is your winter low. Run your address through the cold hardiness calculator, then stick with plants rated for your zone or colder. A handful are rated all the way to zone 1 (-60°F): Rescue applecrab, Siberian crabapple and aspen, with Trailman applecrab right behind them at 1b (-55°F). Most everything else lands somewhere in zones 2 through 4.
Next, sort out pollination. Every apple needs a second apple or crabapple blooming nearby, and so do most pears and plums. The peaches, nectarines, grapes and most of the tart cherries are self-fertile, along with a lot of the berries, so one variety will fruit on its own. Our pollination maps show which trees bloom together.
It isn't all fruit trees, either. There are berry bushes and grapes, nuts like American hazelnut and black walnut, shade and windbreak trees like bur oak, cottonwood and ponderosa pine, and perennial food plants like asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish. If deer are a problem at your place, gooseberries, honeyberry and horseradish are rarely bothered, while apples are a deer favorite. The Plant Finder can help you sort through it all. Everything ships bare root in spring, or you can pick up in Missoula.
Questions we get
What fruit trees can survive -40°F winters?
Anything rated to zone 3 or colder handles -40°F. That covers a lot of our apples, plus many pears, plums and apricots, and hardy shrubs like Nanking cherry and honeyberry go even colder.
When do bare root fruit trees ship?
We ship bare root in spring. You can also pick your order up in Missoula.
Do I need two fruit trees to get fruit?
It depends on the plant. Apples need a second variety blooming nearby, and so do most pears and plums. Peaches, nectarines and most tart cherries are self-fertile, so a single tree will fruit.
