Self-Fertile Fruit Trees
Fruit trees that set fruit with their own pollen, so one tree is enough. Good if you've only got room for one, or there's no other fruit tree of the same kind anywhere close. The bees still do the pollinating. They just don't need a second variety to bring pollen from.
More about self-fertile fruit trees
Most of this list is stone fruit. Every tart cherry we grow is self-fertile, including Evan's Bali, Montmorency, Meteor, Balaton and the Romeo and Juliet dwarf cherries. For sweet cherries, Black Gold, Lapins and White Gold fruit alone and still pollenize their neighbors.
Our self-fertile apricots include Westcot, Morden 604, Debbie's Gold and Zard. Nearly all our peaches and nectarines are self-fertile too, like Contender, Siberian C and Risingstar.
Outside of stone fruit, Mount Royal is our self-fertile plum, Hudar, Concorde and Honeysweet are our self-fertile pears, and Aromatnaya quince fruits alone. None of our apples are self-fertile, so plan on two apples or an apple and a crab. A lot of self-fertile trees still crop heavier with a second variety around, and our pollination maps show what blooms together.
Questions we get
Do I need two apricot trees?
Not with Westcot, Morden 604, Debbie's Gold, Zard, Precious, Alice Sharp, Corbett or Dr 606. All of them are self-fertile, so one tree will set fruit.
Are there any self-fertile apple trees?
Not that we sell. Every apple needs another apple or crabapple blooming at the same time. Dolgo crabapple is a strong pollenizer and it's hardy to zone 1b.
What's the hardiest self-fertile fruit tree?
Debbie's Gold apricot and the Romeo and Juliet dwarf cherries are hardy to zone 2. Evan's Bali tart cherry, Westcot and Morden 604 apricots are rated to zone 2b.
