Zone 6 Fruit Trees & Berries

MFTC Zones, Not USDA Averages: Look Up Your Address →

Zone 6 winters stay above -10°F. Every plant we're offering this spring is rated for zone 6, and this is the coldest zone where we rate Chicago Hardy fig.

Everything is listed A to Z. Plants rated only to 6b, the warmer half of the zone (-5°F to 0°F), are mixed in and have a 6b tag on them.

More About Growing Fruit in Zone 6

We rate every variety by the coldest night it has actually come through, at our two Montana sites in Missoula and Florence or with trusted growers farther north, not by a catalog average. A bare zone number means the whole zone, colder half included. A b, like 6b, means the warmer half only.

Our plants are chosen for cold, so in zone 6 they come with plenty of margin. Each product page shows the warm end of the range too. Most run to zone 7 or 8.

Choose for flavor, ripening season and uses. Our ripening maps show what ripens when at your place, and the pollination maps show which varieties pollenize each other. If you're right on the line, our cold hardiness calculator can confirm your zone.

Questions About Zone 6

What does zone 6 mean on your scale?

On our MFTC scale, zone 6 means the coldest night you should plan for (the 1-in-30-year low) falls between -10°F and 0°F. Zone 6a runs -10°F to -5°F and zone 6b runs -5°F to 0°F. That is colder than a USDA zone 6, which is built on the average yearly low, so run your address through our cold hardiness calculator instead of going off a USDA map.

Can I grow figs in zone 6?

We rate Chicago Hardy fig to zone 6, so zone 6 is the coldest zone where we'd plant it.

Do cold-hardy varieties do well in warmer zones?

Most do. Each product page lists the warm end of the range. A few plants stop at zone 6, so check that line if you're in zone 7 or warmer.
