Zone 2 Apple Trees
MFTC Zones, Not USDA Averages: Look Up Your Address →
26 apples for zone 2, listed A to Z. The ones rated only to 2b, the warmer half of the zone (-45°F to -40°F), have a 2b tag on them. Everything else is hardy through all of zone 2, down to -50°F, and a few are rated even colder.
More About Zone 2 Apples
Hardy through all of zone 2: Parkland, Carroll, Clayton Berg, Dearborn's Unknown, Kindercrisp, Mantet, Norda, Norkent, Norland, Oriole, Prairie Sensation, Rhuby, September Ruby, Shafer, Wealthy and Wolf River. Parkland is rated all the way to zone 1.
Rated to 2b, the warmer half: 9-22 End, Burgundy, Frostbite, Goodland, Gravenstein, Haralson, Honeycrisp, Lodi, Red Sparkle and Redstar. Save these for a 2b site. If you're in the colder half (2a), skip the ones with the 2b tag.
Every apple here needs a second variety blooming at the same time to pollenize it. Crabapples and applecrabs count, and they make some of the best pollenizers there are. Our apple pollination map shows which ones bloom together.
Late bloomers, which give you better odds in a frost pocket: Oriole, Wealthy and Honeycrisp. Good keepers: Norda, Prairie Sensation, September Ruby, Goodland, Haralson, Honeycrisp and Red Sparkle.

Questions We Get
What does zone 2 mean on your scale?
On our MFTC scale, zone 2 means the coldest night you should plan for (the 1-in-30-year low) falls between -50°F and -40°F. Zone 2a runs -50°F to -45°F and zone 2b runs -45°F to -40°F. That is colder than a USDA zone 2, which is built on the average yearly low, so run your address through our cold hardiness calculator instead of going off a USDA map.
Can I plant the 2b apples in zone 2a?
We don't recommend it. A 2b rating means it has come through -45°F, not the -50°F a cold zone 2a winter can bring. Not sure which half you're in? Our cold hardiness calculator will tell you.
Do I need two apple trees?
Yes. Every apple on this page needs a different variety nearby that blooms at the same time.
