Zone 5 Fruit Trees & Berries
Zone 5 winters drop to -20°F. Cold hardiness stops being the limit here: nearly every plant we sell is rated through zone 5, including all the peaches and nectarines we're offering this spring.
More about growing fruit in zone 5
We rate every variety by the coldest night it has actually come through, at our two Montana sites in Missoula and Florence or with trusted growers farther north, not by a catalog average. A bare zone number means the whole zone, colder half included. A b, like 5b, means the warmer half only.
Because our ratings come from Montana winters, a plant we rate to zone 3 or 4 has real margin in zone 5. That margin pays off in the test winter every zone gets sooner or later.
With winter cold out of the way, choose for flavor, ripening season and what you want to make. Our ripening maps help you spread the harvest out, the pollination maps show which varieties pollenize each other, and Shop by Use sorts everything by what it's good for.

Questions about zone 5
What does zone 5 mean?
Zone 5 is an average coldest winter night of -20°F to -10°F. Zone 5a runs -20°F to -15°F and zone 5b runs -15°F to -10°F.
Why buy cold-hardy trees for zone 5?
Margin. A tree that came through -35°F in Montana won't blink at a zone 5 winter, and it'll still be standing after the rare night that drops a zone colder than usual.
Can I grow peaches and nectarines in zone 5?
Yes. Every peach and nectarine we're offering this spring is rated through zone 5.
