Nitrogen-Fixing Plants
These shrubs pull nitrogen out of the air and feed it into the soil, so they help out the fruit trees planted around them. They're tough as nails, handle poor dry ground and make great windbreaks and hedgerows.
Sea buckthorn gives you loads of tart orange berries packed with vitamin C. It's male and female, so plant both. Buffaloberry is a native with tart red berries that birds love, and it's also male and female. Siberian peashrub makes edible peas, feeds chickens and bees, and is about the toughest hedge plant there is.
