Questions We Get

What does zone 2 mean on your scale?

On our MFTC scale, zone 2 means the coldest night you should plan for (the 1-in-30-year low) falls between -50°F and -40°F. Zone 2a runs -50°F to -45°F and zone 2b runs -45°F to -40°F. That is colder than a USDA zone 2, which is built on the average yearly low, so run your address through our cold hardiness calculator instead of going off a USDA map.

Can you make hard cider in zone 2?

Yes. Crabs like Dolgo and Trail and apples like Wealthy and Frostbite make good cider and handle zone 2 winters.

What's the hardiest cider apple?

Dolgo and Trail crabapples are both rated colder than zone 2.
