Somerset Seedless Grape (Bundle of 2)
Somerset Seedless Grape (Bundle of 2)
Somerset is arguably one of the most cold-hardy seedless grapes. It produces rosy, small to medium-sized compact clusters with medium-sized berries that have adherent skins and a strawberry-like flavor.
Best Uses
Best known for fresh eating, Somerset also holds potential for use as a sweet red dessert wine. It could also be used for jams and juices. Its versatility and great flavor make it an excellent addition to your edible landscape.
Cold-Hardy Performance
Somerset does well all over Montana, with the exception of the coldest microclimates east of the Continental Divide, where temperatures can dip below -50°F. For example, we spoke to a customer in Joplin, Montana, who claimed the ambient temperature last winter hit below -65°F (though we still need to verify this). Even if it reached -55°F, Somerset may struggle in such extreme conditions.
Protecting Somerset in Extremely Cold Climates
In these colder climates, consider training the vine’s arms (cordons) low to the ground and mulching over them in the fall for added protection. This technique can help guard against severe frost. Hardy to at least -50°F, Somerset is a resilient variety, but a little extra care may be needed in extreme conditions.
