At a glance: Ravalli Quince is a quince tree provisionally listed at zone 4 (winters to -30°F, an untested estimate), and partially self-fertile, so a second variety nearby makes crops more dependable.

Also called Quince (Cydonia oblonga)
Hardy to Zone 4 to 9. A bare number means the whole of zone 4, colder half included (winters to -30°F). Find your zone with our cold hardiness calculator.
Chill hours About 300 hours (100 to 500). Our estimate. No published figure exists for this variety yet. That's low, so chill is never short here, but it can wake early in a midwinter warm spell. Check your chill hours or see our sources.
Pollination Partially Self-Fertile. Bloom group 4 of 7 (mid), very late spring here. Most quince are self-fertile, but some varieties are not and nothing is known about Ravalli yet, so plant it near Aromatnaya for a sure crop. Nearby varieties that can boost the crop: Aromatnaya Russian Quince. Bloom group is our estimate from the variety's origin and relatives. Pollination Charts.
Rootstock and size OHxF 87: semi-dwarf, about 14 to 19 ft tall unpruned. The most precocious OHxF stock. Plant about 15 ft apart. Our rootstock guide.
Good for Pies and baking (6/10), cooking and roasting (6/10), jams and jellies (6/10). Scores are our 1 to 10 ratings, but we're still new to this one, so they lean on what's typical for quince rather than our own harvests. 8 and up makes our Best Of lists.
What you get Bare root, 2-3 ft or 3-5 ft. Shipped or picked up in Missoula in spring, roots wrapped in moist sawdust. Guaranteed to bud out.

This is our first year growing Ravalli, so everything below is secondhand until we get more long-term data from our own mother trees.

Overview

Ravalli is a quince, one of two we carry along with Aromatnaya. Quince is a small tree with big, fragrant, pear-shaped fruit that mostly gets used for cooking.

Origin and History

We haven't found Ravalli in any published quince lists, including Hedrick's Cyclopedia of Hardy Fruits, Cummins and Raintree, so there's no published history to pass along yet.

Fruit and Uses

We don't have fruit notes on Ravalli yet. Quinces in general are high in pectin, and most are too hard and tart to eat raw, so they usually get cooked into jam, jelly and quince paste, or baked, roasted or stewed. We'll add our own notes once our trees are bearing.

Growth Habit and Spacing

Ours are grafted onto OHxF 87, a semi-dwarf pear rootstock. Quince is a small tree to begin with (up to about 20 feet), so plan on about 15 feet between trees, or 12 with regular pruning. Like pears, quince can get fire blight. W.W. Meech called it the same disease as pear blight back in 1919, so give it good airflow and keep your pruning cuts clean.

Pollination

Most quince are self-fertile, but nothing is known about Ravalli's pollination yet, and quince crops better with a partner anyway. Aromatnaya is the other quince we carry and would make a good one, since quince pollenizes best with other quince.

Cold Hardiness

We haven't found a documented winter survival temperature for Ravalli. For comparison, Utah State rates quince in general to zone 5, and even Aromatnaya, one of the hardiest quinces around, is usually listed at zone 4 to 5 (about -30F). We've listed Ravalli at zone 4 for now, which is an estimate, and we'll update it once we've wintered our own trees.

Questions we get about Ravalli Quince

Does Ravalli Quince need a pollenizer?

It helps. Most quince are self-fertile, but nothing is known about Ravalli yet, so plant it near Aromatnaya for a sure crop. Partners we carry include Aromatnaya Russian Quince.

How cold hardy is Ravalli Quince?

We list Ravalli Quince at zone 4 for now, which means winters down to about -30°F. That's an estimate. We haven't found a documented survival temperature for it, most quince are rated zone 4 to 5, and we haven't wintered our own trees yet. We'll update it once we have.

How many chill hours does Ravalli Quince need?

About 300 hours of winter chill (we count hours at or below 45°F), likely somewhere between 100 and 500. Nobody has published a chill figure for it, so that's our estimate from its relatives and origin. Our chill hours guide has a calculator for your winters, and our research page lists the sources.

How big does Ravalli Quince get?

We graft Ravalli Quince onto OHxF 87 (semi-dwarf), which makes a tree roughly 14 to 19 ft tall if you never prune it. Plant about 15 ft apart.

What is Ravalli Quince good for?

Our top use scores for Ravalli Quince are pies and baking (6/10), cooking and roasting (6/10), jams and jellies (6/10). We don't have fruit notes on Ravalli yet, so those scores reflect what's typical for quince.

What arrives, and when does Ravalli Quince ship?

A dormant bare-root plant, roots wrapped in moist sawdust with a vapor barrier, shipped or picked up in Missoula in spring. Sizes offered: 2-3 ft or 3-5 ft. We guarantee our plants bud out. Stone fruits can be slow, so if one still has not budded out by August 15, write to us and we credit you for the following spring.

Is Ravalli Quince disease resistant?

We don't know yet. Nobody has published solid disease data on Ravalli Quince for fire blight and quince leaf blight, so we list it as unknown instead of guessing. That doesn't mean it's weak. Plenty of the plants we grow have never been through formal disease trials. Our unusual fruit disease resistance chart has every rating, the notes and the sources.
