These hazelnuts come from our good friend James Sapp's largest and most productive hybrid hazelnuts at Sapp's Orchard, his orchard here in Missoula. The flavor is great, and they're an excellent size for hybrid hazelnuts. Many of them come close to the size of a nickel (see the photo). That's big for a hybrid.

We're guessing these are hardy to -40°F. They took -30°F on James's farm with no winter injury at all.

These are hybrids, so every seed is a little different. Plant a bunch, let them pollenize each other, and keep the best ones. Hazelnut seed needs a cold, moist winter before it'll sprout, so plant them this fall or keep them cold and damp in the fridge until spring.
