Overview

Polana is a fall-bearing (primocane-bearing) red raspberry valued for its reliability in colder climates and its ability to extend the raspberry season into late summer and fall.

Fruiting Timing

Unlike summer-bearing varieties such as Boyne and Nova, which fruit on second-year canes in early to mid-summer, Polana produces fruit on current-season growth. In Montana and similar climates, Polana typically begins ripening in late August and continues into September, sometimes later if frost allows. Plant with Nova and Boyne to spread the harvest throughout the season.

Fruit Quality & Uses

Fruit is medium to large with good flavor, well suited for fresh eating, freezing, jam, and general processing.

Growth Habit & Management

Plants are vigorous and productive. Polana can be managed simply by mowing canes to the ground each winter and harvesting a single fall crop the following season.

Pollination

Polana is self-fertile and does not require another variety for fruit set.

Cold Hardiness

Solid zone 3 raspberry in our experience growing it in western Montana, particularly in Stevensville in the Bitterroot where Polana saw near -40F on 1/13/24 with only a few of the canes showing signs of winter injury. If growing this in colder parts of Western MT and especially in Eastern MT where growers can see temps below -40F, be sure to lay on the straw pretty thick around all the canes.
