Zone 7 Fruit Trees & Berries
MFTC Zones, Not USDA Averages: Look Up Your Address →
Zone 7 winters stay above 0°F. Most of our plants are rated through zone 7 at the warm end of their range. A handful stop at zone 6, and they aren't on this page.
Everything is listed A to Z. Plants rated only to 7b, the warmer half of the zone (5°F to 10°F), are mixed in and have a 7b tag on them.
More About Growing Fruit in Zone 7
We rate every variety by the coldest night it has actually come through, at our two Montana sites in Missoula and Florence or with trusted growers farther north, not by a catalog average. A bare zone number means the whole zone, colder half included. A b, like 7b, means the warmer half only. Every product page shows the warm end of the range as well as the cold end.
The few that stop at zone 6 are aspen, chokecherry, sand cherry, and Cortland and Golden Russet apples. Northern plants adapted to long, steady winters can wake up too early in a mild one and lose their bloom to a spring frost.
Everything else is fair game, so choose for flavor and ripening season. Our ripening maps show what ripens when at your place, and the pollination maps show which varieties pollenize each other. See the zone 8 page if you're in the warmer half.

Questions About Zone 7
What does zone 7 mean on your scale?
On our MFTC scale, zone 7 means the coldest night you should plan for (the 1-in-30-year low) falls between 0°F and 10°F. Zone 7a runs 0°F to 5°F and zone 7b runs 5°F to 10°F. That is colder than a USDA zone 7, which is built on the average yearly low, so run your address through our cold hardiness calculator instead of going off a USDA map.
Which plants should I skip in zone 7?
Aspen, chokecherry, sand cherry, Cortland and Golden Russet are rated only to zone 6 at the warm end. Everything on this page is rated for zone 7.
Why buy from a Montana nursery in zone 7?
Our trees are grown and rated in a hard climate, so they bring extra toughness. For the occasional deep freeze or a late spring frost, that margin helps.
