See it on our apricot disease chart (opens in a new tab)At a glance: Perfection Apricot is an apricot tree rated hardy to zone 4 in our ratings (winters to -30°F), and not self-fertile, so it needs a different variety nearby as a pollenizer (bloom group 3 of 7, early-mid for an apricot).
| Hardy to | Zone 4 to 7. A bare number means the whole of zone 4, colder half included (winters to -30°F). Find your zone with our cold hardiness calculator. |
|---|---|
| Chill hours | About 800 hours (700 to 1,000). Our estimate. No published figure exists for this variety yet. Montana winters give it plenty. In milder climates, make sure your winters average at least this much. Check your chill hours or see our sources. |
| Pollination | Needs Cross-Pollination. Bloom group 3 of 7 (early-mid), very early spring here. Perfection needs another apricot nearby as a pollenizer, and Goldrich will not work. Choose an apricot that blooms fairly early, since Perfection is an early bloomer. Good partners we carry: Debbie's Gold Apricot, Tomcot Apricot, 3rd and Myrtle Apricot (Bundle of 2), Morden 604 Apricot and 7 more. Apricot Pollination Map. |
| Rootstock and size | Lovell: full size, about 12 to 20 ft tall unpruned. Doesn't like wet feet or high-lime soil. Our rootstock guide. |
| Good for | Canning and freezing (7/10), drying (7/10), fresh eating (6/10), pies and baking (6/10), jams and jellies (6/10). Scores are our own 1 to 10 ratings; 8 and up makes our Best Of lists. |
| Deer | Sometimes damaged by deer. |
| What you get | Bare root, 5-7 ft. regular grade or 5-7 ft. Larger and More Branching. Shipped or picked up in Missoula in spring, roots wrapped in moist sawdust. Guaranteed to bud out. |
Overview
Perfection is one of only two non-seedling, non-Manchurian commercial apricot cultivars we're growing for 2025—the other being Chinese. While Perfection is not among the hardiest apricots, we've been growing it for several years now, and our earlier plantings have continued to hold up well in our Missoula climate.
Cold Hardiness & Pollination
-
Hardy to: Approximately -30°F
-
If your area experiences colder winters than this, we recommend hardier varieties like Westcot, Morden 604, or other Prairie Province apricots,
-
Pollination: Best results occur when planted with Chinese & Wenatchee Moorpark apricots (also hardy to -30°F), as they pollenize one another effectively

Questions we get about Perfection Apricot
Does Perfection Apricot need a pollenizer?
Yes. Perfection Apricot needs pollen from a different variety that blooms at about the same time. Perfection needs another apricot nearby as a pollenizer, and Goldrich will not work. Choose an apricot that blooms fairly early, since Perfection is an early bloomer. Partners we carry include Debbie's Gold Apricot, Tomcot Apricot, 3rd and Myrtle Apricot (Bundle of 2).
How cold hardy is Perfection Apricot?
We rate Perfection Apricot hardy to zone 4, which means winters down to about -30°F. Our ratings come from real winters at our two Montana sites and from trusted growers across the North, not from a catalog average.
How many chill hours does Perfection Apricot need?
About 800 hours of winter chill (we count hours at or below 45°F), likely somewhere between 700 and 1,000. Nobody has published a chill figure for it, so that's our estimate from its relatives and origin. Montana winters cover its chill easily, and it has a good record where spring frost is a problem. Our chill hours guide has a calculator for your winters, and our research page lists the sources.
How big does Perfection Apricot get?
We graft Perfection Apricot onto Lovell (full size), which makes a tree roughly 12 to 20 ft tall if you never prune it.
What is Perfection Apricot good for?
Our top use scores for Perfection Apricot are canning and freezing (7/10), drying (7/10), fresh eating (6/10), pies and baking (6/10).
Is Perfection Apricot disease resistant?
We don't know yet. Nobody has published solid disease data on Perfection Apricot for bacterial canker, bacterial spot, brown rot, cytospora canker and shot hole, so we list it as unknown instead of guessing. That doesn't mean it's weak. Plenty of the plants we grow have never been through formal disease trials. Our apricot disease resistance chart has every rating, the notes and the sources.
Will deer eat Perfection Apricot?
Sometimes. Deer browse Perfection Apricot now and then, so protect young plants where deer pressure is high.
What arrives, and when does Perfection Apricot ship?
A dormant bare-root plant, roots wrapped in moist sawdust with a vapor barrier, shipped or picked up in Missoula in spring. Sizes offered: 5-7 ft. regular grade or 5-7 ft. Larger and More Branching. We guarantee our plants bud out. Stone fruits can be slow, so if one still has not budded out by August 15, write to us and we credit you for the following spring.
