Overview

This is our second year offering Siberian Crabapple. This tree has a wide range of uses, particularly for regions where very few other trees can survive. It has long been a favorite rootstock for Roger Joy, known for its effectiveness in top working—grafting other apple varieties onto more mature parts of the tree. This technique helps apple varieties establish themselves quickly with the assistance of the Siberian Crab’s hardy stock.

Fruit Characteristics

Size & Uses: The fruit of the Siberian Crabapple is very small, but it can be used to make deep red jelly or blended into hard cider.

Flavor: While the small fruit may not be for fresh eating, it has valuable uses in preserves and fermentation.

Spacing

Given these will be full size/standard trees, plan to plant 16-22 ft. apart. 16 ft for a more rigorous pruning regiment.

Hardiness & Growing Conditions

Cold Hardy to below -50F, possibly even as cold as -60F—this makes it incredibly hardy, suitable for the coldest climates.

Siberian Crab is one of the parents of Dolgo crab, and is perhaps the main source of Dolgo's hardiness.
