Bare Root Fruit Trees
Every tree we sell ships bare root. They go out dormant in spring with the roots wrapped in moist sawdust and a vapor barrier, or you can pick them up at our place in Missoula. Here's every bare root fruit tree we have for spring 2027, and most are rated to zone 3 or colder. Find yours with our cold hardiness calculator.
More about bare root fruit trees
Bare root trees cost less to ship than potted ones, and the roots grow straight into your own soil instead of sitting in a ball of potting mix.
We've got apples, apricots, sweet and tart cherries, peaches, pears, plums and nectarines, plus crabapples, applecrabs, quince, mulberry, pawpaw, persimmon and a few other odd ones.
Each tree lists its size and rootstock, like Bud 118 semi-dwarf or Dolgo full size for apples and OHxF 87 semi-dwarf for pears. Our rootstock guide explains how big each one gets.
When your trees show up, keep the roots moist and get them in the ground soon. Plant with the graft union above the soil line, and water through the first summers. Drip is the best way to do it.
Stone fruits can be slow to wake up. Peaches, nectarines, apricots and plums sometimes don't leaf out until midsummer. Scratch the bark low on the trunk, and if it's green underneath, the tree's alive. Every tree is guaranteed to bud out.
Most fruit trees need a pollenizer. Check the pollination maps, or start with our self-fertile fruit trees, which crop on their own.
