This is one of our first selections—an old, rare, and unique plum seedling found on Bruce Benson’s farm. The mother tree was given to Bruce (who is now in his 80s) by a woman in her 80s over 35 years ago. She grew the tree from seed, and when we asked Bruce what the fruit tasted like, he said, “It will burst with juiciness and get all over your shirt. Excellent flavor.” When we tried it, we couldn’t have agreed more.
Flavor Profile
The plum is indeed very juicy and has a strong berry flavor. It offers a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness—truly a standout.
Cold Hardiness and Rootstock
These plums are hardy to at least -35°F, if not hardier. They are grafted onto Prairie Red and Native plum, which are both hardy down to at least -40°F.
